Election tribunals are already being set up in several regions, said Maung Maung, a member of the Ayeyawady regional election commission, after a meeting of sub-commissions, political parties and media in Hinthada District, Ayeyawady Region, on May 20.
"The 2015 elections will be different from the 2010 elections. The number of political parties has increased. The media will monitor the situation. CSOs (civil service organisations) and the NGOs (non-government organisations) will monitor the UEC and its sub-commissions. For that reason, we need to follow laws and directives," he said.
He also reminded the sub-commissions to study and discuss laws, by-laws and directives.
"There might be problems before and after the votes are cast. The UEC thinks the complaints will be dealt with at tribunals in the respective regions. Polling officers need to compile cases inside and outside the polls."
"I would like to remind the political parties, CSOs and NGOs to know the laws, by-laws and work procedures of the election commission. The commission, the parties and the elections are in the same boat," Maung Maung said.
"If the political parties confront us without studying the laws, it is unnatural. We carry out the tasks in accordance with the laws prescribed by the Lower House."
"Preliminary voter lists will be announced for Pathein and Hinthada Districts in Ayeyawady Region in June. The CSOs, NGOs and media are requested to cooperate with the commission," he said.
The first phase of the nationwide compilation of voter lists was carried between November 2014 and January 2015. The second phase took place between December 2014 and March 2015, and the third phase was between February 2015 and March 2015.
After compiling and amending the voter lists, they will be uploaded to the UEC website. The UEC previously announced that the 2015 general elections would be held at the end of October or early November.
