The Yangon Region supervisory committee has toughened the penalties for passenger buses that do not follow traffic regulations.
Previous penalties, such as temporarily revoking drivers' licences, have proven ineffective, the committee said on May 19.
According to Section 24 of the updated traffic law, bus drivers who give inaccurate directions or who do not install number plates will have their licences suspended for 4 to 6 months.
Penalties also include the suspension of one's driving licenses up to four years.
The committee hopes to decrease heavy traffic and car accidents by toughening the penalties.
In Yangon Region, 83 car accidents occurred in the second week of May alone, leaving 24 people dead. Among these cases, 40 involved careless driving, 16 included driving without a licence and 10 involved speeding.
