Since the Yangon City Development Committee (YCDC) allowed free entrance to some of its parks on April 1, visitor numbers in the month increased by 700,000 or 58 per cent from the same period last year.
In the month, parks in the city welcomed 1.9 million visitors, said an official from the Department of Playgrounds, Parks and Gardens at the YCDC.
Entrance fee, at least Ks300 (US$0.30) is still collected at popular spots like Myaw Sin Island inside Kandawgyi Park, the amusement park inside the People's Square, the Martyrs' Mausoleum where a few parks are located, Myakyuntha and Myainghaywun Park. They are now operated by private companies.
Kandawgyi Myaw Sin Island has been leased to Zaykabar Co, while the amusement park is leased to Natural World Co.
Yangon is home to 63 parks. Some Ks200 million revenue was lost due to the abolition of entrance fee.
